Imprisoned Workers’ Representatives Start Hunger Strike in SW Iran Prison

Four imprisoned Haft Tappeh Sugarcane Company workers have started a hunger strike in protest at their unlawful detention.

The four men who represented the workers were were arrested at their homes on October 29 and detained detained for “disrupting public order” and were interrogated without access to their lawyers.

According to the Telegram channel of Haft Tappeh Sugarcane Company workers, the men, Yusef Bahmani, Hamid Mombini, Massoud Hayouri and Ebrahim Abassi have been transferred to Dezful prison on the order of the judiciary after being detained for three days.

The Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor of Shush confirmed that the workers were arrested for participating in protest rallies, stating that the workers were “still in detention due to their inability to provide bail.”

He also accused the detained workers of “disturbing” and “creating unrest” by holding a protest rally.

On Saturday, a group of workers gathered in front of the management office of the company protesting the arrest of the four workers.

The workers’ gathering continued in the following days with the workers marching on the streets Shush in Khuzestan province, southwest Iran to demand the release of their co-workers.

The workers of Haft Tappeh Sugarcane Company have staged strikes and protest rallies in the past years to protest the late payment of wages, poverty wages, insecure employment and poor working and living conditions.

The workers went on strike for months, and have been repeatedly persecuted, beaten, arrested, and even tortured while in detention.
