Human rights defender Maryam Karimbeigi was arrested today by the state security forces after raiding and ransacking her mother’s home.

Shahnaz Akmali, Karimbeigi’s mother said in a video today that her daughter was arrested.

Shahnaz Akmali, the mother of a protester who was killed in #IranProtests in 2009, says security forces raided her home & arrested her daughter, Maryam Karimbeigi.

She said that the state security forces raided and ransacked her home. She has not yet been notified of the charges against her daughter.

Shahnaz Akmali’s son, Mostafa Karim Beigi, was shot and killed in Tehran during a 2009 protest.

Akmali and her daughter Maryam Karimbeigi have become outspoken and sought justice for the killing of peaceful protesters.

Police carried out a similar raid against her in February, but she was not at home when the operation took place.

In April she was summoned to the security office at the Islamic Azad University, Science and Research Branch, to receive an official explanation after she was allegedly expelled from the school while studying for her master’s degree in sociology.

Shahnaz Akmali had been previously imprisoned for seeking justice.

She was arrested by the Intelligence Ministry in January 2017 and sentenced to a year in prison for “propaganda against the state” in connection with her activities as a member of the grieving Mothers of Laleh Park, a group of victims of political violence.

In his October 2017 verdict, Judge Mashallah Ahmadzadeh of Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court also banned the 54-year-old mother from leaving the country, engaging in political activities, and posting on social media for a year after the completion of her prison sentence.
