Launched on 28 January 2024 by a group of political prisoners from Unit 4 of Ghezelhessar penitentiary in Karaj against the rise in executions, the “No to Executions Tuesdays” movement has spread to prisons across Iran.
On Tuesday, inmates of Sheiban prison in Ahvaz, south-west Iran, joined the movement. The network now includes 23 prisons.
These prisoners protest against the death penalty and call for its abolition as an inhumane and irreversible punishment, regardless of the nature of the charges, motives or beliefs of the condemned.
The campaign has now spread to multiple prisons, including Evin Prison (women’s ward, wards 4 and 8), Qezel Hesar Prison (units 3 and 4), Karaj Central Prison, Greater Tehran Prison, Khorramabad Prison, Arak Prison, Asadabad Prison in Isfahan, Sheyban Prison in Ahvaz, Nezam Prison in Shiraz, Bam Prison, Mashhad Prison, Lakan Prison in Rasht (men’s and women’s wards), Qaemshahr Prison, Ardabil Prison, Tabriz Prison, Urmia Prison, Salmas Prison, Khoy Prison, Naqadeh Prison, Saqqez Prison, Baneh Prison, Marivan Prison, and Kamyaran Prison.
