Alarm over Rising Execution Rates in Iran
In recent days, at least seven prisoners have been executed in Adelabad Prison in Shiraz, as well as in the prisons of Zanjan and Qom—a development that has sparked growing concern over a new wave of executions in Iran.
According to reports, in the early morning of Sunday, May 25, 2025, two prisoners, Mohammad Barzegar Beigi and Mohammad Zare Moayedi, were executed in Adelabad Prison in Shiraz. Both had been sentenced to death on drug-related charges. Barzegar was a resident of Shiraz, and Zare Moayedi was from the Deshmeshniari region of Beyza in Fars Province.
On the same day, Alireza Rezaei, Mobarak Rahmani, Vahid Karimzadeh, and Farhad Farahnak were executed in Qom Prison. Alireza Rezaei, a 27-year-old from Qom, and Mobarak Rahmani, a 25-year-old Afghan national, had both been sentenced to death on charges of murder. Vahid Karimzadeh, aged 35 from Eslamshahr near Tehran, and Farhad Farahnak, 25, from Qom, had been convicted of drug-related offenses and murder, respectively.
Prior to these executions, in the early morning of Saturday, May 24, 2025, Homayoun Amjad was executed in Zanjan Prison. He had also been sentenced to death on drug-related charges.
These executions come amid alarming statistics: during the month of Ordibehesht 1404 (April 20 – May 20, 2025) alone, at least 168 prisoners were executed in Iran—a record high in recent years, signaling a sharp rise in the implementation of death sentences.
