A non-lethal weapon widely used to kill protesters
With the start of nationwide protests in Iran, we have witnessed high levels of violence carried out on the streets. So significant that an overwhelming number of protesters have been killed by brutal hitting and multiple blows of batons.
No bullets were heard being fired in the major cities, and no Kalashnikov was fired, but still, the protesters who would have been the targets for those shots were silently killed and buried in the city commotion.
Initially, these instances seemed just a few, and the use of brute force by one or more security forces. But with the spread of protests and the level of violence against the demonstrators, this reality occurred on the streets of Iran.
How forces use batons as a means to kill
The Iranian regime intentionally uses batons to kill protesters in major Iranian cities and the Capital.
Usually, the forces chase the protester into an isolated alley where a group of 6-10 men attacks and beats the civilian with their batons. They strike each blow to the victim’s head, skull, and chest. Eventually, the protester dies at the spot, and there is no camera to capture it.
This method does not require a bullet; baton poundings are enough to kill the protester. Arbitrary death is accomplished in the most heinous way, through torture and suffering.
The forces then take the victim’s body hostage and threaten the family to declare the cause of death as suicide, falling from building heights, previous medical conditions, overdoses, etc., before handing over the dead body.
This method of killing protesters allows the Iranian authorities to escape accountability. As no bullets were fired, it cannot be proved that these murders were committed by state forces. But the goal of killing protesters is achieved.
This is how Iran has been managing its crackdown on city protests.
The ‘Nazi-Abad crime’ that was recorded
Only one example of such crimes was recorded completely. It has been named the ‘Nazi-Abad Crime’, showing a citizen severely beaten by a large number of security forces and ultimately shot. When the video of Nazi-Abad Crime was widely shared, it flared the reactions of Iranians and the international community. Tehran’s police chief inevitably declared, this behavior is not acceptable, and violators will be warned. Evidence shows us that such behavior is both approved and the method used by security forces against peaceful protesters. The video taken of Nazi-Abad’s crime is the only recorded document of this violent method.
32 cases of fatal clubbing with batons
Iran Human Rights Monitor has been able to investigate 32 separate cases involving protesters who were murdered by brute beatings and violent use of batons. This documentary study covers 32 fatal cases. The last case involves the brutal beating of a young girl who remains in coma. The documentary does not include cases of protesters seriously injured or arrested.
The crime committed in Nazi-Abad was repeated at least 32 other times. Unfortunately, no camera lens was able to record it. The Iranian regime has carried out this level of violence with impunity and continues to do so.It is imperative that international human rights organizations urgently seek answers from the Iranian authorities.
